I love these little guys! It's always so thrilling to have them in my garden. They come fearlessly close and love to take showers when I'm watering the flowers.

Too cute Toco toucans

Zoo Atlanta happily announced their latest additions recently: Two Toco toucan chicks that were hatched around St. Patrick’s Day. It's a huge success for a species that can be difficult to breed in captivity.

Awww, poor baby

Though it was her only egg to survive and hatch, this baby Kea parrot is so ugly even its mother couldn’t love it. Nelson, taken in by Bergzoo in Germany, is currently being cared for in an incubator, and staff are holding out hope that he’ll turn into a swan.

Bald Eagles Nesting in Palos Township

How exciting! Just a few minutes from my house!



A pair of bald eagles has nested in Palos Township next to Tampier Slough, a section of the Cook County Forest Preserves near Palos Park. In the last few weeks, eaglets have hatched, making this the first confirmed nesting site in Cook County in more than a century.



The nest itself is about 6 feet wide, leading officials to believe the pair began to build last year.



The eaglets are not expected to venture outside the nest for several weeks and will rely on their parents' fishing. The eagles will generally cover an area of one to two miles in their hunting expeditions.



It was Bill Allaway, owner of Wild Birds Unlimited, in Palos Park who first alerted forest preserve district staff about the nest.

Awww, poor silly Hilda

Hilda the hen has hatched a clutch of ducklings after accidentally sitting on the wrong nest of eggs.



When tiny Indian runner ducklings emerged instead of fluffy yellow chicks, Hilda wasn't put off and adopted the babies as her own.

Two, too cute!

Two orphaned baby owls have moved in with Jimmy Robinson, park keeper at Longleat Safari and Adventure Park in England, where they are busy finding small places to hide. The tiny 6-week-old burrowing owlets, nicknamed Linford and Christie (after the gold-medal-winning British Olympian) were hatched in an incubator at a local hawk conservancy and need 24-hour care for another month.

Anybody want a peacock?

The Fox Hollow community in Boynton Beach, FL, is considering paying a trapper $6,000 to round up half the neighborhood population of peafowl and kill them.



“I want every one of them out of here,” said resident Dorothy Laswell. “They bang on my French doors, throw themselves at my windows, and wake me up every morning, jumping on my roof at 6 o’clock. And during mating season, they scream and holler.”



There are an estimated 400 peafowl living in Fox Hollow, and they have their defenders. So the homeowner’s association is considering a compromise of sorts: eliminating half the bird population.
