New purple crabs found in the Philippines

Four new species of freshwater crab, bright purple in color, have been discovered in the biologically diverse but ecologically-threatened Philippines.

The tiny crustaceans burrow under boulders and roots in streams, feeding on dead plants, fruits, carrion and small animals in the water at night.

Bear falls safely from tree

A young bear, estimated to weigh between 150 and 200 pounds, had wandered
onto the University of Colorado at Boulder campus and climbed into a
tree.

"The bear was tranquilized by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife
Department and it fell onto some mats that the Rec Center provided," CU
Police Department spokesman Ryan Huff told the paper. "It is now in a
cage and it will be relocated at a higher elevation."

National Hairball Awareness Day - - Really?

The origin of this “holiday” is unknown. We suspect it was created by the manufacturer of a wonderful cat hair removal implement ... (hint: FURminator - we'd love a free sample to review.)

National Hairball Awareness Day is getting some coverage on the interwebs - the best being ModernCat's collaboration with jewelry designer Heidi Abrahamson to create an exclusive line of fine jewelry for men featuring cat hairballs.

These cufflinks and tie tack are the perfect accessories for men who feel that the cat hair which normally accumulates on their clothing is not sufficient:

I wish the hairballs produced by my three cats were this attractive. Generally, ours are longer, grayer, and coated with slime. Not jewelry material at all.

Product review: DERMagic Flea Bar

The weather here in Illinois is finally heading towards summer and guess what, along with warmer weather, the little blood-suckers - fleas and ticks - are also making their appearance.

Just playing in the back yard, our new puppy, Poppy, had two ticks and a few fleas in her fur. Good thing we had a sample of DERMagic Flea Bar which I was waiting to use on an occasion just like this.

First off, the DERMagic Flea Bar smells wonderful!

We thought that the bar would be more difficult to apply than a liquid soap, but that wasn't the case. The lather was nice, easy to use, and we didn't have spilled liquid shampoo all over the place.

The DERMagic Organic Diatomaceous Earth Flea Bar uniquely uses a combination of diatomaceous earth and essential oils. Diatomaceous earth is deadly to any insect or larvae, each tiny “shell” is very sharp, like razor blades to insects, but completely harmless to all animals, fish, birds, both externally and internally.

Poppy is now clean, sweet smelling and insect free. Thank you, DERMagic!

Take a look at the DERMagic website for this product and their entire line of skin care for animals.

Eric Wilson shoots dogs

Eric Wilson, owner of Square Dog Photography, loves to shoot dogs as a professional photographer. But he also volunteers at Lee County Domestic Animal Services in Fort Myers, FL, photographing animals available for adoption.

Wilson says that animal photography requires patience and a love of animals. Shelter photography requires much more. In "I Shoot Dogs," he offers some great tips for any fledgling photographers who would like to volunteer at their local shelter.

Ivory dog

This is a netsuke, created circa 1700. Japanese men used netsuke to suspend various pouches and containers from their sashes by a silk cord.

Netsuke had to be small and not too heavy, yet bulky enough to do the job. They needed to be compact with no sharp protruding edges, yet also strong and hardwearing. Above all they had to have the means of attaching the cord.

Although netsuke were made in a variety of forms, the most widely appreciated is the katabori (shape carving). This is a three-dimensional carving, such as this one. Katabori netsuke made in the early 1700s were less concerned with realistic portrayal of their subject. Here, for example, the carver has caught the spirit and character of a dog. However, he has not tried to show surface detail, such as the fur. Another typical feature found on early examples of this type of netsuke is the distinctive himotoshi (cord holes). One hole was considerably larger than the other to accommodate the cord knot, although you cannot see them on this example.

Baby tamandua

The Minnesota Zoo is
thrilled to announce the  rare birth of a Southern Tamandua (pronounced
tah-man-do-ah) infant. It is the first Tamandua ever born at the Zoo.

Sometimes called “the stinkers of the forest,” Tamanduas give off a strong smell to mark their territory and scare away other animals.

Too cute Toco toucans

Zoo Atlanta happily announced their latest additions recently: Two Toco toucan chicks that were hatched around St. Patrick’s Day. It's a huge success for a species that can be difficult to breed in captivity.

By the way, here's what they looked like right after hatching:

Rare white killer whale spotted off Russian coast

Scientists have glimpsed a white adult orca, or killer whale, while on a research expedition off the far eastern coast of Russia.

The sighting in waters off the Kamchatka peninsula is believed to be the first time such a whale has been spotted in the wild.

Researchers said the marine mammal, whom they nicknamed Iceberg, was swimming with its mother and siblings, and appeared to be fully accepted by its 12-strong family.

Pink panther? No, it's a pink leopard

A male leopard with a strawberry-colored coat has been spotted in South Africa's Madikwe Game Reserve, conservationists announced this week.

Tourists in the reserve had occasionally seen the unusual animal. But it wasn't until recently that photographer and safari guide Deon De Villiers sent a photograph to experts at Panthera, a U.S.-based wild cat-conservation group, to ask them about the leopard's odd coloration.

It is suspected that the pale leopard has erythrism, a little-understood genetic condition that's thought to cause either an overproduction of red pigments or an underproduction of dark pigments.

Can you guess what this is?

The giraffe weevil (Trachelophorus giraffa) is a weevil endemic to Madagascar. It derives its name from an extended neck much like that of the common giraffe. The extended neck is an adaptation that assists in nest building and fighting.

Though it was her only egg to survive and hatch, this baby Kea parrot is so ugly even its mother couldn’t love it. Nelson, taken in by Bergzoo in Germany, is currently being cared for in an incubator, and staff are holding out hope that he’ll turn into a swan.
